Sexual Health Screening

There are many common sexually transmitted infections that we screen for in The Cremore Clinic.

Chlamydia is one of the most commonly picked up sexually transmitted infections. One half of the infected men and around 70% of infected women do not have symptoms. Two thirds of the sexual partners of chlamydia-positive individuals are also positive for chlamydia infections. Chlamydia is very treatable with a course of antibiotics. It is usually checked for by doing a swab or sometimes an early morning urine sample. Samples are sent to the National Virus Reference Laboratory and results are usually back in one week. Nowadays we can often check for gonorrhoea on the same sample.

Gonorrhoea is a bacterial infection that usually causes symptoms in men but can be symptom free in women. Gonorrhoea is less common but can cause a lot of similar type problems to chlamydia. There are a few other common bacteria we check for usually in women with similar swabs done at the same time. These include Gardnerella and Trichomonas.

HIV and Hepatitis B are also sexually transmitted infections. These are checked with a simple blood sample. All of these infections including HIV are now treatable. HIV is not curable but is now very manageable. Our doctors are very experienced in doing these checks.
